2007 DGC SURF

The goal of this project is to win the 2007 Urban Challenge, an autonomous vehicle competition scheduled for 3 November 2007, with a grand prize of $2M. The project will support 6-12 SURF students working as part of Team Caltech to design, build, test and race a fully autonomous vehicle capable of urban driving. Students should have a strong background or interest in computer science, electrical engineering and robotics.

Schedule

The schedule for the DGC SURF is non-standard due to the timing of the race. The project schedule for the summer is:

  • 18-29 June: mandatory team orientation for students who are not current members of Team Caltech
  • 2-6 Jul: vacation period
  • 9 Jul: official start of DGC SURF
  • 22-31 Oct: National Qualifying Event
  • 1-4 Nov: Urban Challenge Event

All students applying for SURF positions should indicate whether they are able to continue working on the project through 3 November 2007 (race day).

Preproposal

Students interested in submitting a SURF proposal must submit a pre-proposal by 26 Jan 07 (Fri). Students selected to write a SURF proposal will be announced no later than 28 Jan 07 (Sun) and a proposal information meeting will be held the week of 29 January.

To submit a pre-proposal for the DGC SURF project, send e-mail to info [at] gc.caltech.edu with the following information:

  • Name and e-mail address
  • An up to date resume and transcript (unofficial is OK)
  • A one paragraph description of your research interests as part of Team Caltech (please include this in the body of your e-mail, not as a separate document).

All materials must be sent in electronic format (PDF preferred).
